Where to go for our honeymoon? 04/11/2008

By Hui Zhi

With the first HDB appointment fixed, the next thing thing we are looking at is where to go for our honeymoon. I have a week of the September holidays to go for a short trip and a longer one at the end of the year.

We have considered a few places like Thailand, Philippines and Melbourne self-drive for end of the year. We've also had some suggestions for places like Malaysian and the Bintan beach resorts, Japan, New Zealand etc.

Where do you think is the place that's suitable for us? We'd love to hear from you. Do leave your comments here. =)

Some suggested places so far include:
Rio de Jane Brazil
Honolulu, Hawaii
Cancun, Mexico
Surfer’s Paradise, Australia
Negril, Jamaica
Miami, Florida
Viti Levu, Fiji
Boracay, Philippines
Tenerife, Canary Islands
Ko Phi Phi Don, Thailand

However, considering we only have a week (September School Holiday) for our honeymoon , we will only consider places which are less than 3 to 4  hours flight away.

Shortlisted places: (View photos and videos)

Try Greece.
We also considered Australia for our honeymoon in 2001 and a friend then was suggesting might as well give Greece a shot since it probably cost the same as Aussie, or slightly more.
Santorini and Hydra are beautiful islands, esp in Santorinin with its white washed buildings and blue roofs, and times passes soooooooo slowly there, that it's the perfect spot for honeymoon.
If you are planning to go there, let Sam and I know, we will share with you the value-for-money places to eat and stay.

Ah, you are constrained by the 3-4 hrs flight.
Ok, then I vote strongly for Bali, stay amidst the padi fields (at <SGD100 or 150 a nite), no TVs in room, and open air shower overlooking the padi fields is simply heavenly.
And Bali has mountains, seas, up-and-coming winery ...... aiyoh, can't tahan.
We have the exact place for you to stay and makan. Call us if you wanna find out more.

Thank you for your suggestion

Greece seems a bit too far for us... =P Currently, we are comparing Bali with Phuket @ the moment. Have you been to both?

Our plan is to go for a short trip in September and a much longer one in December as it is a longer holiday for Hui Zhi. =)

Ya, been to both Bali and Phuket. In term of rating, I give Bali 4.5 stars and Phuket 3 stars.

Beachwise, Bali is far prettier and cleaner. It has mountains, seas, padi fields, winery ... decent shopping, great art scene if you need to get away from the huzz and buzz, and if you miss it, just hop unto a car to Kuta for your city fix.
Accommodation wise, Bali is more holistic because many builders there cleverly fuse accommodation with the surroundings to enhance the experience, as opposed to bluntly building modern buildings on otherwise rustic beaches.

Food wise is fantastic at Bali (but you need to know where to go). Go ask Angie, she had her honeymoon there too.

Somehow, Phuket gave me a feeling of overly touristy (Bali is also, but there are pockets on the island where you can get away from it all, Ubud is one such place).
You can see what a massive fan of Bali I am, and if I have a chance now, I will happily pack my bags and zip there right away. A caveat though, afternoons there can get really hot and being under the sun is probably the last thing you wanna attempt (and the other is obviously to protect Hui Zhi from becoming a bbq chicken), so afternoons are good to laze by the pool or do your massage and spas (spa wise I think Phuket is better), or just put on your singlets and fan yourself with a rattan fan under the tree :-)

Phuket's food can be good and shopping super boring, but Bali's food definitely can fight if you are given the right places to go makan (we ate bbq duck in a pavilion located in the middle of a padi field, quite heavenly, though I think heaven shld be somewhat cooler)

You may want to try the resorts in Bali. If you're willing to spend (about $700 to $1000 per person), you can get a nice villa with an infinity pool. If you've seen my photos on Facebook, you'll know what I'm talking about. In fact, I'll be going to Bali this June and my friends are currently looking for a suitable villa for the trip. Can email you the shortlisted ones if you're interested.
